Installation is straightforward:

This is the most common method recommended by Mojang.
Step 1: Download your X-Ray .zip file. Do not unzip it. Minecraft reads compressed files as texture packs.
Step 2: Open Minecraft Launcher. Play Minecraft 1.8.8. Once at the main menu, close the game (this ensures the resourcepacks folder exists). Installation is straightforward:
