Windows 22631 May 2026

The Pitch: A native, supercharged "Alt-Tab" and Desktop management system that groups apps by Task not just by Window, allowing users to freeze and resume entire workflows instantly.

Given that Build 22631 is a production release (not a Dev or Beta channel build), it is generally considered very stable. However, because it is built on the 22H2 core, it inherited some of that version's long-standing bugs.

For most users, the difference is invisible but important for support and updates.

| Feature | Build 22621 (22H2) | Build 22631 (23H2) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Copilot | Not available | Yes (Preview) | | Dynamic Lighting | No | Yes | | Native RAR/7-Zip support | No (needs third-party) | Yes | | Taskbar ungrouping | No | Yes | | File Explorer modern pane | No | Yes | | Security updates | Supported until Oct 2025 | Supported until Oct 2026 |

Crucially, both builds share the same cumulative update packages each month. When you install the monthly security update (e.g., KB5034765), it patches the core system files identically for both 22621 and 22631. windows 22631

A common question is: Does upgrading from 22621 to 22631 slow down my PC?

The answer: No.

Because 22631 is an "enablement package," the core OS kernel, drivers, and security stack are identical to 22621. The upgrade is a 90KB download that simply toggles feature IDs. There is no performance degradation moving from 22H2 to 23H2 (22631).

However, there are two exceptions:

Benchmark Stability: User reports and Microsoft data show that Build 22631 scores identically to 22621 on PCMark 10 and Cinebench.

When you are running build 22631, you have access to all the features of 22H2 plus a new set of enhancements. The most notable include:

  • Taskbar Enhancements:

  • Windows Backup: A new, more comprehensive backup app that remembers your pinned apps, Start menu layout, settings, and credentials, making it easier to migrate to a new PC. The Pitch: A native, supercharged "Alt-Tab" and Desktop

  • Ink Anywhere: Improved handwriting-to-text conversion in any text field across the OS when using a stylus.

  • Administrators should consult vendor advisories and Microsoft Knowledge Base articles for concrete, up-to-date issue lists tied to build 22631.

The most visible addition. Build 22631 includes the first iteration of Windows Copilot—an AI assistant integrated into the taskbar. It can summarize documents, change system settings, and launch apps. Note: Later builds (24H2) expanded Copilot, but 22631 was the first stable build to include it.
