Like its predecessor, Verdades Secretas Season 2 did not come without scandal. Originally written by Walcyr Carrasco, the prequel required extensive reshoots and script changes. A leaked first draft was considered so sexually explicit (involving underage storylines) that Globo demanded rewrites before production.

Upon release, critics praised the final product for its maturity. Folha de S.Paulo called it "a necessary autopsy of Brazilian elitism." However, conservative groups condemned the show for its lingering sensuality. The second season carries an 18+ rating—just like the original—and it earns that rating through psychological tension more than graphic nudity.
