| Scenario | Need Split? | Reason | |----------|-------------|--------| | USB drive formatted as WBFS (raw partition) | No | Native WBFS handles >4 GB | | USB drive formatted as FAT32 | Yes | FAT32 max file size = 4 GB | | USB drive formatted as NTFS | No | NTFS supports large files, but some loaders prefer FAT32 | | SD card for Wii (FAT32) | Yes | Same FAT32 limitation |
Most users today use FAT32 for broad compatibility with homebrew apps, making splitting essential for Brawl.
Prerequisites:
Steps:
Note: Do not rename or delete any of the split parts. The loader reads them sequentially. super smash bros brawl wbfs split
With modern advancements, you have alternatives.
Option A: NTFS (No split required)
USB Loader GX and CFG Loader now support NTFS drives. If you format your Wii drive as NTFS, you can store the full 7GB WBFS file as a single RSBE01.wbfs. However, NTFS support is secondary; some homebrew apps (like Nintendont for GameCube) prefer FAT32. For a pure Wii drive, NTFS works fine for Brawl. | Scenario | Need Split
Option B: Emulation (Dolphin) If you are playing on PC via Dolphin Emulator, you do not need to split anything. Dolphin reads ISO, RVZ (highly compressed), or full WBFS files natively. The split is only for real Wii hardware.
When you split a WBFS file, you are not compressing it. You are performing a logical cut. Steps:
When you launch the game via USB Loader GX or CFG Loader, the USB software dynamically reads the split files as if they were one continuous file. To the Wii, it looks like one game. To Windows, it looks like two files.
