Set during the tumultuous decline of the Balhae Kingdom (a medieval Korean-Manchurian empire), Shadowless Sword follows the story of Prince Jeong-hyun (Lee Seo-jin), the last heir to the throne, who has been living in hiding as a peasant. When the ruthless Emperor Geon (Shin Hyun-joon) of a rival faction sends assassins to eliminate him, the royal bodyguard Sobi (Yoon Soy) – a master of the legendary "shadowless sword" technique – is dispatched to protect him.

The film is a classic "bodyguard on the run" narrative, reminiscent of Shaolin Temple meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The plot twists as the prince transforms from a cowardly, reluctant leader into a warrior capable of reclaiming his birthright.

A legendary female warrior, Yeun So-ha, is dispatched to find the Prince and escort him safely to the safety of the remaining Balhae forces. She is a master swordsman known for her speed and precision—earning the film its title, as her sword moves faster than the eye can track, seemingly casting no shadow.

She locates Jeong-hyeon, but he is a bitter, cynical drunkard who refuses to accept his identity or responsibility. He wants nothing to do with saving a kingdom he doesn't remember. However, the enemy is already closing in.

Korean historical dramas were not widely distributed in India during the 2000s. The Hindi dub of Shadowless Sword (likely produced by a home video distributor or a dedicated fan group) opened the film to millions of viewers who do not read subtitles comfortably. For Indian audiences who grew up on dubbed versions of Iron Monkey or Crouching Tiger, this dual-audio format is a nostalgic bridge.
