Schmid never started a landscape with fussy details. He looked for 4 or 5 massive, abstract shapes (sky, distant hill, foreground shadow, main tree). In his own words, “If the big shapes don’t work, no amount of detail will save you.” Look for his plein air studies—they are often just 6x8 inches, painted in 45 minutes, proving that value design is everything.

Schmid is famous for his ability to render the temperature of light. In his landscapes, you won't just see "green grass" or "blue sky."
