Genre: Action / Masala Starring: Salman Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui Review: For fans of commercial action cinema, Kick was the biggest blockbuster of the year. It tells the story of Devi, who becomes a thief to cure his boredom, leading to a cat-and-mouse chase with a police officer.

If you want pure, unapologetic masala, Gunday is your film. Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor play coal thieves turned Calcutta gangsters. It is loud, illogical, and absolutely entertaining. Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan (in a supporting role) elevate the material.

Genre: Satire / Comedy-Drama Starring: Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput Review: Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, PK became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. It follows an alien (PK) who lands on Earth and loses his remote control to his spaceship. He questions religious dogmas and superstitions to find his "God" and get his remote back.

Genre: Crime / Drama / Thriller Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Irrfan Khan Review: An adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995. Haider returns home to find his father missing and his mother in a relationship with his uncle.

Genre: Psychological Thriller / Noir
Why it’s the best: Do not watch this for entertainment; watch it for art. Ugly is a dark, cynical look at human nature. A missing child case exposes the corruption and selfishness of everyone involved. It is not a feel-good film, but it is arguably the best written film of 2014.
