Based on analysis of the two most cited editors (version 2.0+ of the @kusumik editor, last updated ~2014–2015):

Copy the entire folder to your desktop. Name it MHP3rd_Backup. Never edit your only copy.

Warning: Always do this before editing. Copy the entire game save folder (e.g., ULJM05800) to your desktop or a subfolder named BACKUP. If the editor corrupts your file, you can delete the corrupted version and restore this backup. Not all editors are created equal

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd is a masterpiece. It deserves to be played. If a save editor keeps you playing by removing the tedious barriers, then it’s a tool, not a sin.
