Mediastar Z2 New Software — Full
Installation is straightforward: a 1.2–1.6 GB OTA package that takes ~15–20 minutes to download and install on a typical broadband connection. Post-update first boot feels snappier; app launch animations are tighter and system transitions are more consistent. Storage footprint grew by about 300–400 MB due to new features and updated system apps.
The update includes the latest monthly security patches and hardening for biometric authentication. The device now supports per-app VPN routing and adds stronger sandboxing for third-party keyboards.
One of the silent killers of streaming boxes is poor network performance. The old Z2 firmware had a notoriously buggy SMB2 implementation—connections to NAS devices would drop after 20 minutes.
The new software introduces:
Q1: Is this the official software from Mediastar? A: The company Mediastar ceased active development in 2022. The "new full software" is maintained by the OpenZ2 Alliance, a community of developers. However, it carries the Mediastar branding legally as it uses the original bootloader.
Q2: Will I lose my subscription card pairing? A: Yes. Flashing full software resets everything. You will need to re-insert your card and wait for the ECM (Entitlement Control Message) to re-update. This can take 24 hours for some providers (e.g., Sky Italia).
Q3: Can I downgrade to the old software?
A: Yes. The bootloader is backward-compatible. Simply repeat the USB flashing process with an older .bin file (e.g., v2.5.9). mediastar z2 new software full
Q4: Does this software support AV1 codec? A: No. The Mediastar Z2 hardware does not have an AV1 decoder. It will only play H.264, H.265 (HEVC), MPEG-2, and MPEG-4.
Q5: How often is "full software" released? A: A "full" release (not a patch) comes every 9–12 months. Small online updates are available via Menu → Software Update → Online Update.

The Z2 now rivals the NVIDIA Shield in file playback and networking but still lags in UI consistency due to the weaker GPU.
