A "dump file" (often ending in .bin) is essentially a complete backup of the receiver's internal flash memory. It contains the firmware (software), the bootloader, and the default hardware configurations.
When a receiver becomes stuck on the "ON" display, shows "----", or freezes at the logo screen (commonly called a "hanged" or "dead" box), a standard software update via USB usually won't work. In these cases, writing a dump file via a programming tool (like a Flasher/Loader) is the only solution.
