Don't expect miracles. This is a 802.11n, single-band (2.4 GHz), USB 2.0 adapter.

  • Disable Windows automatic updates for this device:
  • Install the official driver:
  • Pro tip: Driver versions 1030.40.xxx or newer work best on Windows 11 22H2+.

Most users expect plug-and-play. Unfortunately, Windows 10/11 often marks this device as an "Unknown USB Device" or installs a generic driver that fails with Code 10 or Code 43.

Cause: 802.11n disabled or interference. Fix:

  • Ensure your router is not forced to 802.11b only.
  • | Problem | Solution | |---------|----------| | Adapter detected but no networks found | Disable Bluetooth (2.4 GHz interference). Change router channel to 1, 6, or 11. | | Frequent disconnects | In Device Manager → Power Management → uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device". | | Linux module not loading | Run sudo dkms install rtl8188fu/1.0 then sudo modprobe 8188fu. | | Slow speed on Windows 11 | Disable "Large Send Offload" in adapter properties. | | Adapter gets very hot | Normal for this chip. Add a USB extension cable to move it away from other hot USB ports. |

Pro tip for Windows 11: Disable "Memory Integrity" under Core Isolation temporarily if the driver fails to load. The RTL8188FTV driver is often not WHQL-signed for modern Windows.
