The Myth. Fifteen years in the making, Chinese Democracy is the most expensive rock album ever recorded. Critics and fans were polarized. Expecting Appetite for Destruction Part II, listeners were met with an industrial, nu-metal influenced, electronically dense wall of sound. It sounded nothing like the bluesy sleaze of 1987. However, viewed in isolation, it is a fascinating, if overproduced, piece of art. The title track and "Better" proved Rose still had a unique vision, even if it alienated purists.
