Cakewalk by BandLab is free, but it isn't "abandonware." It uses a legacy licensing system to verify that the software hasn't been tampered with. Every few months, the software "phones home" to BandLab’s servers to renew a token.
If you see the activation screen, one of three things is usually happening:
Do not panic. You do not need to buy anything. You do not need to find a crack. You just need to re-activate using your free BandLab account.
BandLab Assistant won’t sign in or shows network errors:
Installer fails or Cakewalk crashes on launch:
Activation shows as offline/expired after reinstall or migration:
Plugin or content licensing issues (third-party instruments): bandlab cakewalk activation
Absolutely. The license allows you to sell, stream, and distribute music created with Cakewalk. You do not owe BandLab any royalties.
This is the most common point of confusion. Since the software is free, why do you need a serial number or an internet handshake?
There are three historical and technical reasons for the BandLab Cakewalk activation process:
In short: Activation is BandLab's way of saying, "Prove you are a real human with a free account, not a bot or a pirate."
Sometimes, firewalls, corporate networks, or aggressive antivirus software block automatic activation. When this happens, Cakewalk will show an error: "Activation could not be completed. Your trial has expired." (Don't panic—the "trial" is a ghost from the Sonar days).
Here is how to fix it via offline activation. Cakewalk by BandLab is free, but it isn't "abandonware
Step 1: Open the Offline Dialog
Step 2: Generate an Installation Code
Step 3: Visit the Offline Portal
Step 4: Enter the Unlock Code
Your DAW is now permanently activated on that machine.
There is some confusion in the community right now. BandLab recently released a new DAW called Cakewalk Next (which has a different, subscription-based model). Do not panic
This article applies to Cakewalk by BandLab (the legacy SONAR interface). If you are using the new "Next," the activation rules are different. But for the classic, free, fully-featured DAW—this activation method still works perfectly.
Success! You will see a green checkmark or a message saying "Product is activated."
