Elara looked through the barred window of the archive. Outside, in the rain, Kaelen was pacing frantically, calling out her name with a voice raw from screaming, looking like a hollow shell of his former self.

With a heavy heart, Elara nodded. She closed her eyes and gathered every memory of her warmth, every flutter of her heart, and every dream of a happy future with Kaelen. When Elara opened her eyes, the world seemed colder, the colors dimmer. She looked at Kaelen through the window. He was just a man. A tired, wet, loud soldier. The ache in her chest was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow, echoing silence.

Outside, Kaelen suddenly stopped pacing. The fog cleared from his eyes. He looked around in confusion, wondering why he was standing in the mud, before sheepishly picking up his cloak and walking back to the barracks, rubbing his head in total bewilderment. He was saved.

Asmodeus laughed, a sound like cracking ice, as he dissolved back into the pages of the grimoire. Elara quietly closed the book, locked it back in its secure vault, and walked out into the cold evening.
