When Adobe shut down the activation servers for CS2, they faced a problem: legitimate users could no longer activate their software on new machines. To resolve this, Adobe provided a direct download link to the software (including the French version, "Adobe Illustrator CS2 français") and a universal serial number that bypassed the now-defunct activation server.
This led to a viral spread of the news under headlines suggesting the software was now "free" ("gratuit"). However, Adobe quickly clarified the situation. The intention was never to release the software into the public domain or make it freeware. The license terms remained unchanged: the software was intended only for those who had purchased a license for CS2. While the technical barrier to entry (activation) was removed, the legal barrier (ownership of a license) technically remained.
