The 3.5-inch mechanical hard drive (or 2.5-inch SSD) is usually mounted in a caddy on the lower-left side.


If you need to replace the screen:

This is enough for upgrades, but for full disassembly, continue. If you need to replace the screen:


  • Remove the metal EMI shield covering the motherboard – it is held by several Phillips screws. Some screws may be under sticker labels.
  • Cooling fan: The fan sits on top of the heatsink. Remove its power cable (small 3-pin header) and any screws holding the fan bracket. Lift the fan off.
  • Heatsink removal: The copper heatsink covers the CPU. Loosen the four spring-loaded screws in a diagonal pattern (1-3-2-4). Lift the heatsink – you may need to twist gently. Clean off old thermal paste from both CPU and heatsink with isopropyl alcohol.
