917-front Audio Not Connected

If the cable is connected securely but the error persists, the motherboard might be disabling the port by default.

Realtek drivers have a feature called "Jack Detection" or "Connector Sensing." If this is disabled, or if a third-party audio application (like Voicemeeter or Discord) has taken exclusive control of the audio device, the system may fail to poll the front panel, resulting in a 917 error.

The mechanical sensor inside the front headphone jack is a tiny metal leaf switch. If you’ve rammed a plug in too hard (or bent a plug inside), that switch may be stuck in the "open" position, permanently telling the PC that nothing is connected. 917-front audio not connected

Unlike a simple "no sound" warning, 917 often halts the entire audio engine in ASIO or WASAPI exclusive mode. Why? Because ASIO contracts require all requested channels to be ready before the callback starts. If one channel (front of 9) fails connect() or prepare(), the driver returns ASE_NotPresent (or a vendor code mapped to 917), and the host aborts playback.

This cascades into:

Outdated or corrupted drivers are the number one cause of false disconnection errors.

A surprising number of "917" errors are caused by a floating ground. If the front audio panel is not properly grounded to the main chassis, the detection circuit won't register a connection. If the cable is connected securely but the

Error 917 can be a ghost left behind by a bad Windows Update.

  • Restart your PC. Windows will install a basic driver. Do not test yet.
  • Install the fresh driver you downloaded from your motherboard vendor.
  • Restart again. Check if the 917 error persists.
